Deborah Rudell
I grew up in a small town in British Columbia, the eldest of four children. Typical of the 60’s and 70’s, there were many children in the neighborhood and plenty of independence and autonomy.
My parents were busy with younger siblings and as a child I found solace in my stuffed animals and imaginary friends. As a preteen, my grandmother taught me about reincarnation, Edgar Cayce, yoga and Jesus.
As a teen, my coping mechanism for the pain I saw and felt in the world was a reading list that included Max Heindel’s The Rosicrucian Cosmo-Conception, Gina Cerminara’s Many Mansions, Levi Dowling’s The Aquarian Gospel of Jesus the Christ and books about Atlantis.
At nineteen, after a year at university, I left home, worked in dentistry and was exposed to real life drama when I fell in love with a married man. Through an unconventional series of events, we ended up living together with two children and started a spiritual community on 80 acres of land. Several years of practicing rebirthing and affirmations led to India and a spiritual teacher who came to the United States and established a commune in Oregon.
Over the next three years, we lived with him and thousands of other disciples in a spiritual community. After the ranch folded, we moved back to British Columbia, got married and led an ordinary life practicing dentistry, both of us disillusioned about the spiritual journey and where it had led us. Before a year was up another adventure called to us, this time to Kauai to rebuild an old boat.
In the lush tropical environment of Kauai, the five years rebuilding Elixir were a time of healing and integration. The monotonous, repetitive tasks of calking, sanding, and varnishing gave my hands a creative outlet while my mind and soul traveled back in time. Exploring the previous 12 years of an unconventional life, I endeavored to integrate my life experiences and make sense of the world of boats and the sea that I found myself in.
Currently, I am a registered dental hygienist and work in clinical practice as well as teach dental hygiene in a community college in San Diego. I enjoy swimming, dancing and the beach. The tiny house I share with a black cat was built by a retired sea captain in 1906 and has a tall ship carved into the front door.
