The day we first met Elixir, in the boatyard in Nawiliwili Harbor. ~ January 1988

We arrived in Kauaii at the beginning of the year, January 1, 1988, and stayed at a friend’s beach cottage until we found our own place. Of course, we went to Nawiliwili Harbor to visit our new project right away. And oh my, she was in rough shape, and she seemed immense to me. But we had just left the winter in British Columbia and the warm, balmy climate of a tropical island felt pretty good to me!

I wondered then, how I was going to get through such a huge project. This was my first taste of many similar wonderings. And maybe that is why it has been a momentous experience in my life. The essence of this project was a process of feeling impossible odds against success and then beating them, over and over again.

We needed a lockable space for our tools, so made one from a Sears garden shed by installing a floor and reinforcing the doors. ~ January 1988

Deborah Rudell

I grew up in a small town in British Columbia, the eldest of four children. Typical of the 60’s and 70’s, there were many children in the neighborhood and plenty of independence and autonomy. My parents were busy with younger siblings and as a child I found solace in my stuffed animals and imaginary friends. As a preteen, my grandmother taught me about reincarnation, Edgar Cayce, yoga and Jesus. As a teen, my coping mechanism for the pain I saw and felt in the world was a reading list that included Max Heindel’s The Rosicrucian Cosmo-Conception, Gina Cerminara’s Many Mansions, Levi Dowling’s The Aquarian Gospel of Jesus the Christ and books about Atlantis.
